Boy Break Machine

Often people think being male has various perks, granted these perks only seem to matter to those with a high degree of neuroticism. Yet I can assure you as a child my life had very few perks in it. I was very tall for my age, 5’11 in elementary, or Primary as you may know, and now I stand at 6’10. (2 Meters), so you can imagine the ostracization of being different, especially tall and sickly at a young age. The school was very much designed to break me, my intelligence, compassion, and even how I function mentally, I was given Strattera, Adderall, Ritalin and a whole host of other medications. All to treat me being, well a boy.

Boys are naturally hyper and more rambunctious than girls of that age. Yet given our education system in the States, (Which was patterned after the system for Roman Slaves might I add.) it is actually more difficult for boys to learn and do well in school. They get lower scores on average and if you’ve ever been in a high school AP class it’s 80% Female at least. Girls have an easier time learning and paying attention in a classroom. Boys learn better in a workshop or kinetic environment. Often Mimicking what they see in others. Not only does our system prioritizes how girls learn over boys, teachers often penalize boys for being “Too rowdy” when really they are within the normal range of boyhood. On top of the traumatic “surgery” they often overgo as infants, you can see how the “perk” concept does not hold any water.

In my youth I often had issues with school, getting in trouble for being too energetic or frankly defending myself, which is another way we penalize boys, for defending themselves from bullies that teachers not only don’t stop but often encourage if you are “Out of the norm”. Given my unusual belief system, I also received some prejudice for being different, on top of being bisexual, you can tell I was often receiving resistance for merely just existing. We really need to reform public education to make it more acceptable for boys so they can later lead better more productive lives.
