From a judicial perspective, it may appear like just another homicide but society and people close to the victim have different opinions about the incident.
Bahsid’s lawyer Lynn Calvacca acknowledged that Byrd’s death was a disaster but also criticized the family for not supporting him enough while he was growing up.
She pointed out that her client is a very sick man and that the prison system would not help him manage the things he needs to manage.
“What happened to that woman is awful, horrible, but don’t say that you were there for him,” Bahsid’s lawyer Lynn Calvacca said to his family.
Cassandra McLean-Smith, the victim’s sister said “We will never have closure, but we will go on, we are a strong family,” McLean-Smith also mentioned that she has got custody of Byrd’s 10-year-old son since her death, and although she had not been expecting this responsibility, she would not let him forget about his mother, who she described as her best friend.
Bashid’s 75 years old grandfather said “I love you, I was the one who taught you how to walk, you broke my heart”
Bashid’s sister Porsche Lovette said that she was not ready to forgive her brother yet, remarking she felt no relief about the case coming to an end and she has lost the person who truly believed in her.
“One of the most callous homicides I’ve ever been a part of in my career,” said Assistant District Attorney Aaron Kalpan.
