Tragic and shocking incident that captured international attention. The case involved the murder of his mother and the subsequent dismemberment of her body.

The details surrounding the event sent shockwaves through the community and left many searching for the answers.

As the case unfolds, one can’t help but wonder: What must have been the circumstances that drove a man into committing such a heinous act?

On Feb 25, 2013, Bahsid McLean, 23, was suffering from a psychotic episode when he did something awful to his mother. He didn’t just hurt her; he cut her into pieces, which is a very hard thing to even imagine.

Thoughts of the accused make this story even more scary as according to the young man, he only did what he did because someone else would have done it if didn’t.

He even took a picture with his mom after the act of killing, which is hard to understand. Many people talked about Bahsid’s mental health and whether he could conceive what he was doing because he used to hear voices and act in ways that were not ordinary.

Bahsid’s Defence

McLean had an unsettling past, including taking pictures with his mother after she was gone and hearing voices that others could not hear, which raised serious concerns about his mental health.

McLean’’s lawyer tried hard to convince the court that Bahsid couldn’t be fully held responsible for his actions due to his mental illness. The lawyers argued that the mental health issues had a big impact on the event, implying that the accused was not fully conscious of his behavior during the crime.

Despite these justifications, the evidence against McLean was strong, indicating him as the main person responsible for the tragic event.

The intersection of law and mental health

The legal system strives to balance the well-being of individuals and mental health conditions. The courts take into consideration the mental health of individuals involved in the legal matter.

The trial of Bahsid McLean, accused of killing his mother, Tanya Byrd, was filed with emotional and complicated legal arguments.

The prosecution however painted a different picture, showing evidence that McLean acted with full knowledge and motive, attempting to hide his actions afterwards, which was contradictory to the defence’s portrayal of him as mentally unfit.

This incident didn’t just hurt Bahsid’s family; it made a lot of people in the community and beyond feel many intricate emotions. And with all the legal proceedings that happened after, it added more layers to an already knotty and sad story.

Unmasking the Stigma: Prioritizing Men’s Mental Well-being

“I didn’t do anything wrong,” said McLean during court.

Mental health statistics show that around 40% of men do not talk about their mental health situations.

29% of those say they are embarrassed to talk about it.

What are the underlying factors that are stopping men from sharing their mental and emotional problems with people close to them?

Cultural norms: Men are often expected to be strong enough to deal with such problems and according to the norms expressing emotions can be a sign of weakness.

Parenting style: Often the male child is raised in a strict and toxic manner, which encourages the child to hide their emotions.

77% of all suicides are committed by men, indicating the situation of men’s mental health around the world.

People’s Opinion on The Bahsid Mclean Selfie Incident

From a judicial perspective, it may appear like just another homicide but society and people close to the victim have different opinions about the incident.

Bahsid’s lawyer Lynn Calvacca acknowledged that Byrd’s death was a disaster but also criticized the family for not supporting him enough while he was growing up.

She pointed out that her client is a very sick man and that the prison system would not help him manage the things he needs to manage.

“What happened to that woman is awful, horrible, but don’t say that you were there for him,” Bahsid’s lawyer Lynn Calvacca said to his family.

Cassandra McLean-Smith, the victim’s sister said “We will never have closure, but we will go on, we are a strong family,” McLean-Smith also mentioned that she has got custody of Byrd’s 10-year-old son since her death, and although she had not been expecting this responsibility, she would not let him forget about his mother, who she described as her best friend.

Bashid’s 75 years old grandfather said “I love you, I was the one who taught you how to walk, you broke my heart”

Bashid’s sister Porsche Lovette said that she was not ready to forgive her brother yet, remarking she felt no relief about the case coming to an end and she has lost the person who truly believed in her.

“One of the most callous homicides I’ve ever been a part of in my career,” said Assistant District Attorney Aaron Kalpan.

Bashid’s statements:

“If I didn’t chop her up, somebody else would have”

“If you kill somebody, you should be able to cut them up too, right? if you can’t do that, if you don’t have the stomach to cut them up, then you are a coward”

“That’s how I cope, I disappear in my mind.”

Conclusion

The case of Bahsid Mclean Selfie is a reminder of the tragic consequences that can happen when individuals turn to extreme acts of violence. It highlights the importance of seeking help when needed and addressing mental health issues.
